A couple months ago I was asked by WGBH and Boston Casting to share a story on their amazing program “Stories From The Stage.” It was a great experience as I had a chance to talk about my high school Latin teacher for an episode titled “Everyday Heroes.” I won’t give away the story itself but I will tell you some of my thoughts on the experience.
The biggest challenge was working with a more strict time constraint than I’m used to for live performances. They had a word and time limit to keep so it took me a couple weeks to edit things down to a concise story that was streamlined but still felt like it had some of my quirks and felt like “me.” I had to rehearse it a lot and that became one of the best parts because our rehearsals involved hanging out with seven other people who were also selected to be a part of the show. Seven other people whose stories humbled and inspired me. The people I met on this show were easily the best part of the whole experience.
Another challenge was the taping itself. I arrived at the studio at 2:00 PM and was told later that I would be going on last, at 9:00 PM to close out the show “on a fun high note.” This was a huge challenge to stay in my zone for…uh…seven hours. I was beginning to psyche myself out by the time I hit the stage and faced the cameras. One great thing was that I had a terrific audience to perform for. Great listeners. A lot of responses. And there were also two very special guests in the audience. I was told I could invite two guests and I decided to do something in the spirit of the event. I invited two of my actual high school teachers from almost 40 yeas ago to come be a part of the show. I was thrilled they actually said yes and seeing their faces during and after the performance was something I’ll never forget.
So, tonight is the big night that my story will air. Below are the links and times you can watch it. Anything you can do to share and spread the love and message would be appreciated. Thank you all for your support and I’ll try to write more now that I finally have a new website. I prefer this forum over social media. Then again, I prefer almost anything over social media.
